Cast iron

For cast iron the equivalent carbon content (CE) concept is used to understand alloying elements will affect a heat treatments and casting behaviors. The following formulas are used to determine the CE:^[4]

This CE is then used use to determine if the alloy is hypoeutectic, eutectic, or hypereutectic; for cast irons the eutectic is 4.3% carbon. When casting cast iron this is useful for determining the final grain structure; for example, a hypereutectic cast iron usually has a coarse grain structure and large kish graphite flakes are formed.^[7] Also, there is less shrinkage as the CE increases.^[6] When heat treating cast iron, various CE samples are tested to empirically determine the correlation between CE and hardness. The following is an example for induction hardened gray irons:^[5]

Chill testing: the effect of carbon equivalent.

Wedge and chill testing has been a valuable means of controlling cupola/ciron quality for years. The necessary equipment is relatively simple and inexpensive, and the tests can be completed quickly. The use of these tests gives the furnace operator a means of detecting adverse changes in the condition of a cupola melt.

Chill testing provides the opportunity to evaluate and change the properties of the gray iron melt to make it consistent with expectations. "Reading" the chill fracture is a quick way of integrating the combined effects of carbon and silicon and correlating them with the expected properties of the castings.

The inclination of an iron to solidify  

  as a very hard white iron is referred to as the chilling tendency. Control of the chilling tendency is an important aspect of gray iron metallurgy metallurgy (mĕt`əlûr'jē), science and technology of metals and their alloys. Modern metallurgical research is concerned with the preparation of radioactive metals, with obtaining metals economically from low-grade ores, with . Measurement of chilling tendency is done by pouring a test casting against a chill plate (or into a triangular shaped core mold) and measuring the cooling differential as an indicator of iron composition.

In Part 1 of this series, we considered pouring practices and iron cooling as factors in chill testing. Now, let's take a look at the effect of carbon equivalent (CE) on chill testing. Carbon, silicon plus a small amount of phosphorous phos·pho·rous
adj.
Of, relating to, or containing phosphorus, especially with a valence of 3 or a valence lower than that of a comparable phosphoric compound.  are necessary when producing gray iron. A balance of these elements limits white iron formation and subsequent machining problems.

The combined effect of carbon and silicon (combined, these serve as both chill reducers and graphitizers) can be represented by a CE value, where CE = C + 1/3 (Si + P). Thus, if the total C of a melt is 3.3%, the Si is 2. 10% and the P is 0.06%, the CE would be 4.02%. The foundry would correct high chill by increasing inoculant in·oc·u·lant

Important considerations in the production of gray iron are the carbon/ silicon ratio, pouring and cooling temperatures, and the alloying and residual elements in the iron melt. The carbon content influences the fluidity of molten iron and affects the machinability of gray iron castings. Silicon strengthens and hardens ferrite fer·rite

Various aspects of melting practice are important in determining chilling tendency and mechanical properties. With any cupola mix, the first metal tapped is frequently higher in total carbon than subsequent taps taken after melt equilibrium conditions have been reached. To compensate for this, it is common practice to add more steel in the first few charges.

However, the added low-carbon scrap may be great enough to require the addition of extra silicon to maintain the desired silicon/carbon ratio. Normally, the lower the CE, the greater the chill. Undermost circumstances, higher CE cast irons will have less shrinkage .

The amount by which inventory on hand is shorter than the amount of inventory recorded.

Notes:
The missing inventory could be due to theft, damage, or book keeping errors.  than lower CE irons.

For example, an iron with a CE of 3.6% will solidify over a larger temperature range, while one with a CE of 4.3% will solidify over a much smaller range. The higher CE iron solidifies as a eutectic with virtually no primary austenite aus·ten·ite

Residual or other alloying elements, as well as the CE value, affect chill readings. Alloys can act as either carbide , any one of a group of compounds that contain carbon and one other element that is either a metal, boron, or silicon. Generally, a carbide is prepared by heating a metal, metal oxide, or metal hydride with carbon or a carbon compound.  stabilizers, which increase chill tendencies, or graphitizers, which tend to reduce chill tendencies. Table 1 and 2 illustrate the approximate effect of CE on the chill values of cast gray iron. In Table 1, the carbon is constant and the CE is varied by changing the silicon. In Table 2, the Si is held constant and the CE varied by altering the C content. A measure of whether a steel can be easily welded is to determine the carbon equivalent (C_equiv or C^D_equiv) of the steel. There are a number of different equations that can be used for this, the most appropriate depends on the type of steel being considered. For low alloy C-Mn steels with a ferrite + pearlite structure the appropriate equation is:

For the steel to be easily weldable then C_equiv needs to be less than about 0.4 or the C^D_equiv needs to be less than about 0.25. 
There are a number of different welding techniques that can be used for steels. Selecting the most appropriate technique depends upon the final product, plate thickness, geometry of the weld required.

The equivalent carbon content concept is used on ferrous materials, typically steel and cast iron, to determine various properties of the alloy when more than just carbon is used as an alloyant, which is typical. The idea is to convert the percentage of alloying elements other than carbon to the equivalent carbon percentage, because the iron-carbon phases are better understood than other iron-alloy phases.

Higher concentrations of carbon and other alloying elements such as manganese, chromium, silicon, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, and nickel tend to increase hardness and decrease weldability. Each of these materials tends to influence the hardness and weldability of the steel to different magnitudes, however, making a method of comparison necessary to judge the difference in hardness between two alloys made of different alloying elements.

ya i am in love, i talked to so many girls, but i always dream to be with her, i always tried to feel her, always tried to get her personal number, always wished to GOD that she receives the call when i call her at home, rather than her dad. 

i can't forgot those days when i have spent several summer nights on roof, wished a power cut, just to see her when she come on roof, waked up early, moved so early on road to catch her going school, i still remember those smile, when she broadcast it, while i was trying to catch her through my cycle & she is with her dad on motorcycle (thanks GOD the speed with her dad drive, i never feel looser with my cycle & never loose a glimpse while racing with her dad). 

Taking a seat on first bench of left most corner & continuously seeing her through the window to her section, as she always opt to seat on last bench, despite some vacant bench.

i will also never forget, the KK mam, which understood all the things running between us, & her funda to get rid of it, she is a girl, one day she will marry with someone & will live happily, & you are a boy, you have to work hard, you have to build your future, so concentrate on study, & my movement of head in acceptance of yes, & from the next period i continue with my best habit.Writing her name with mine on lab's bench just expecting she will one day come across this.

Finally the GOD has listened my wish, she is away from home & free to talk with me, for i have waited since my childhood (since when i have feeling of love, which i think, skilled on very early age).

The story is attributed to my dear friend Pankaj, as its all about his life style, and the love story which he shared some part of it with me.

Just a smile of her, reached him on cloud 9. It was nice to see mani after that, his face had a splendid charm. He was out of his control, he wanted to recapitulate that moment or his eyes would be seeing recap.

He was a little bemused, whether she loves me, or its just a normal smile, which she use to spread every where. 

Next day, we woke up,get freshen, called everyone of our group for breakfast, but mani was missing, we rang his mobile no., but he was not responding, we moved to class for the second period (it was very usual those days, in 1st class the attendance was only 1% (only 2girls out of 50 students)), but today it was 1.5%, as mani was already there, occupying very next seat to her.

I heard that signature and nature never changes.I am not sure about signature but damn sure about nature that  a beautiful girl can change it, even they can keep you out of nature (i have seen few guys spending there golden 4 years in a closed room, just to keep him in touch with his love one).

We never wanted to mess up mani, he was busy with some stupid talk on metallurgy (it was just an storm to us, how a zero knowledge person can have talk on such a topic, "sorry mani, don't mind, i always have such a believe on you, just kidding ), we all slowly slowly capture all the seat surrounding mani, & everyone's ears raised just to get wind of those talk, but the whole attempt gone waste, as it was a rubbished metallurgical chatting, which was the worst subject to talk with such a mantrap. we all moved & seated as a gentleman as these things don't effect us or we might be afraid that she may ask few question to us, after a sorry of mani.

- it is sleek and very stylish and has more memory in its C-drive compared to N97 which is considered very important.

- Its really good phone in terms of multimedia and internet, and ofcourse, in terms of firmware update support too.

- The keyboard is great. Use to have an E71 which I really liked and this keyboard is so much better. I do have to use 2 thumbs but there is so much space to do so and I do have normal sized male thumbs.

- not so common like the iphone.. haha (Update) - looks better than the iphone, just kidding cause I think both the N97 mini & the iphone are two of the best looking phone out there

Personnaly, the best phone I've had. The cons I could think of is that the battery drains fairly quickly if you surf the internet but this is probably the same for other phones; interface is not as colourful and fanciful as some phones but still looks pretty cool (especially the home screen with wigets)but more importantly functional.

i really miss this journey"

Normally everyone while journey desire to have a beautiful/smart one beside him/her. still if you don't get it, but have more than option then...

I am going to Patna, my hometown, where i would have no tension regarding shift duties i.e. to go in A or C shift i.e. to wakeup at early morning 05:15 AM, even if i wouldn't at this time then at most at 05:45 AM, Just dressup & move to catch the bus, it shouldn't bother you that you haven't dump the waste of your chubby ass.

I am happy, i m  going to Patna not just due to freedom from office, but there is mummy (a sweet one) & papa, which brings sweets & fruits for me for the days i am there. I really love those kala jamun. This time i am much  beaming as i am going through flight FLY KINGFISHER.

I woke up at 06:30 AM, it was not hard for me today, as it is giving me positive stimulus, i caught local reached santacruj at 09:30 AM, which was much early as per flight schedule --- 11:40 AM boarding. Anyways to utilize the time, i turned to some hotel, taken some breakfast then moved to airport. After all formalities, i putt my butt  on a sofa (after a hectic travel through local on bench i really need this one) at gate no.10 of 1A. Opened my bag, got a novel from it "Oops i Fell in lovE".

Suddenly a beguiling girl dolled up, knocked the inquiry desk about flight no. A3571. My head automatically turned towards her, its the same flight i am about to board. I found everyone was staring her, it is men's supernatural quality of scanning through eyes.
